Firebug – A Great SEO Tool and Excellent Add-On from Firefox

May 16
2009

If you are not a Firefox user, you should be…

In particular if you are involved in the Internet Marketing game….  Firebug allows you to quickly analyze the code of the website that you are visiting….

For example, if I am researching the keyword ‘wealthy affiliate review‘, I can go to the website on google page 1 and check out its code very easily.  I just right click on the screen and select ‘Inspect Element’, and WHAM, the screen splits and shows me the code….  I love it… A software programming collegue of mine who is an absolute genius showed this to me a few weeks ago….

By investigating how the top performing site on Google is optimizing their site for the keyword can help us gain insight as to what we need to do to our website to compete for that particular keyword….

Firebug Inspection

Firebug Inspection

You can see that this website is optimized VERY WELL for the keyword ‘wealthy affiliate review’ by inspecting it with Firebug… The owner of this website has done a great job..  Props to them!

The keyword is included in the header and meta tags several times – as well as title etc…  good optimization techniques were used on this webpage…  you can clearly see that you must do all of the same to your web page if you want to compete for this keyword…  it looks like a very competitive market however…. this web master must have worked very hard to market this site!

If you want to install Firebug, you need to open your firefox browser and select Tools > Add-ons …..

Then select the button that says ‘Get Add-ons’…  Type ‘Firebug’ into the search field, and then select the Add-on!

You can also go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843 to get Firebug….

Basic Keyword Research – Figure Out The Benefits Of The Keyword!

Apr 26
2009

First of all, I learned most of what you see below from One Week Marketing by Pot Pie Girl….  it really helps with keyword analysis….. what you see below is only really scratching the surface…  this will help you get started with a basic structure to organize the keywords you are analyzing….

Get organized with your keyword research!

Many people seem to just compile a quick list of keywords and start writing articles before really analyzing the keywords that they have selected…  This is the number 1 newby mistake IMO. I have made this mistake with countless campaigns, but I have learned my lesson…..  I do extensive keyword research before seriously embarking on a new campaign for a small business, online product, service, or anything else, really….

Newcomers to internet marketing and SEO get so excited about churning out articles and it can often result in poor keyword research and a lot of useless articles – they may be well written and have awesome content, but if it is written for a keyword that is too competitive, then you are not going to achieve the results you are hoping for……

Check out this earlier post on the Basics of Keyword Research

Keyword analysis takes TIME. Don’t try and take shortcuts.  Shortcuts equal short profits – in particular when it comes to keyword research.  Why would you want to undercut the most important part of your campaign?

You first need to think about the product/website/blog or whatever you are promoting….

What are the reasons that someone would buy the product/service, or whatever is being offered?  What is the customer going to gain?

You need to think about the benefits of the service or product being offered…..

Your product or service may be the greatest thing since the dawn of time, but if you don’t optimize your content for the specific keywords that benefit the buyer, you will get nowhere fast…. Analyze the benefits of a product or service, and incorporate those benefits into your keyword research!

Let’s take the core training example again….  one of the benefits of core training is abdominal muscle development….. a sweet six pack!

What would someone who is looking to gain a sweet six pack of abs type into Google?

‘how to get six pack abs’ maybe?

Lets examine that keyword a little more closely….  if I search that keyword in quotes at Google, we receive 195,000 results…..  that is WAY too much competition – remember from VNet’s first keyword research post that we need to find a keyword that is 5000 or under when searched in quotes at Google….

Let’s try “how to get a six pack fast” – that gets 7470….  that’s getting better… but not good enough….

I think “how to get a killer six pack” could be a winner…..  it gets 3050 results in Google… that is a keyword worth examining further for the core training niche.  Someone looking to train their core is likely looking for a killer six pack.

But now what do I do?  How do I know that this keyword is worth my time?

A little more research on Google will help….

Google intitle:”how to get a killer six pack” – it gets 35 results…

VNet Keyword Research Tips

VNet Keyword Research Tips

I then compile the information that I have learned so far…..  it is a good idea to keep a simple spreadsheet at first…  I recommend something similar to the following screen shot to begin with:

Keyword Analysis Template Screenshot

Keyword Analysis Template Screenshot

The above is just a suggestion – your keyword analysis should be more complex…. One Week Marketing really expands on the everything your are reading here…..  You should definitely expand on this simple start – include the benefits of each keyword – what is the customer trying to achieve by typing the keyword into Google? Listing the benefits of a particular keyword will stimulate your brain and result in more keywords to research….

So…… back to the keyword ‘how to get a killer six pack’ – we know that it receives 3050 quoted results, 35 intitle quoted results, and 755,000 regular search results….. I did a regular Google search as well….

The keyword is under 5000 Google quoted results, which is good… most seasoned internet marketers (like Pot Pie Girl) recommend starting with keywords under 5000 quoted results…..

The 35 intitle quoted results tell us that 35 web pages are using that exact phrase in the title.  That is a key number…. we need to beat out those 35 other pages…. I think that is doable with a few ezine articles, a blog, and maybe a squidoo page…..

Now that I believe that I can compete for that keyword, I start the process over again and expand my keyword list!

Learn more incredible keyword analysis techniques from Pot Pie Girl….  Get One Week Marketing and kickstart your internet marketing campaigns…..

Using A Social Bookmarking Tool to ‘Juice Up’ Your Links….

Mar 20
2009

Social Bookmarking is a very popular method for generating backlinks right now….  All kinds of IM professionals use Social Bookmarks to juice up their links and possibly get some more traffic.

So what are the best bookmarks to use?

Below are the best social bookmarking sites…..

www.delicious.com

www.digg.com

www.stumbleupon.com

www.mixx.com

www.propeller.com

Each of these bookmarking sites are good – they will provide your articles with strong backlinks and more weight with Google.

Remember that these bookmarks also have submission guidelines.  There will be some that will accept a US Free Ad, and others that won’t….  Some like Squidoo and others don’t…  Some even reject Ezine Articles…  You’ll have to check out the submission guidlines yourself for each bookmark – or just try and submit your bookmark and see what happens!

Another GREAT tool for Social Bookmarking is Social Marker. Social Marker Reviews all say it is a great tool…..  Best of all it is a FREE tool!

Simply head over to www.socialmarker.com and enter in your bookmark information into the Bookmark details section….

Then select the bookmarks sites that you want to submit to from the list provided….

Click ‘Submit’ and then Social Marker will take you to each of the bookmarks selected and allow you to quickly make a submission by inputting your bookmark details automatically….

You will need to make a Login for each Social Bookmarking site, but you can do that during your first submission to each site using Social Marker….

This is a wicked tool that can get you 30-40 backlinks for your article within 15 minutes. Very very worth your time….  If your keyword research is good, then you can have a good chance of getting to Google Page 1 with not only the article that you are promoting, but the social bookmark results themselves.

I have had several instances where the bookmark and the article were on Page 1 for a particular keyword, which just gives my article more exposure and a surefire chance at getting sales!

A Keyword Research Resource for FREE… Check Out This Post!

Mar 18
2009

If you are just getting started in the online marketing game, you probably have A LOT of questions regarding keywords….

How does one find these mysterious converting keywords? What keywords are ‘winners’ and how can you tell?  If you have been looking for a good free keyword research resource, you have found the right website!

A winning keyword will be searched a lot, but have little competition…..  To determine competition on the keyword you are checking out, put the keyword in “quotes” and search it at Google.  If the results show less than 5000, then you know you will have a good chance at competing for that keyword….

But before we go further on researching keyword competition, let’s get down to the basics.

I have promoted some products in the fitness/exercise niche, so I will use core training as a keyword example.  Now the keyword core training is too broad for sure.  Let’s put it in quotes and check the competition.

keyword-research-screenshot-core-training1

Keyword Research

We see 1,420,000 quoted results for the keyword “core training”….  That is WAY too much competition! Remember, most Internet Marketers will not tackle a keyword above 5000 results….  and neither should you!

You have the niche that you want to promote, but how can you find more targeted keywords with less competition?

Use the google keyword tool to drill down your keyword and ideas.  https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

I entered core training and quickly found several other keywords.  Check them out:

core training exercises

core fitness training

core training workout

core training program

core strength training

I can then run each of the above keywords through the Google Keyword Tool again to find more ideas, or I can just use my brain. I quickly came up with these variations:

best core fitness program

best core training workout

best core training program

best core training exercises

I then take the above keywords and search them in Google with “quotations” to determine the keyword competition.  A Google search in quotes tells you the amount of web pages that have that phrase….  essentially your competition!

“best core fitness program” yields 1 result.

“best core fitness program” yields 1 result

“best core training program” yields 7 results

“best core training exercises” yields 122 results

Maybe this is a little too targeted – we do want some searches, right?  I’m not saying not to write articles on these keywords (we all know about slow rolling keywords), but let’s take another look.

I’m going to try “best core training” and it yields 267 results – getting better.

Now I will check out some of the originals.  “core training exercises” gets 9570 results, which is good but might be high – Again, remember that a lot of experienced marketers recommend looking for keywords with under “quoted” 5000 results.

“core fitness training” gets 3850 – Now that’s more like it!

“core training workout” shows 4920 results

“core training program” shows 28,100 – too high!

“core strength training” produces 34,600 results

It looks like we’re going with “core fitness training” and “core training workout”

Now Google these 2 keywords with allintitle:”insert keyword here” for a little more info.  The results will show the amount of webpages with the keyword you searched in the title.

It is also a good idea to check out the keywords on Google Trends – check out http://www.google.com/trends and enter in your keywords with commas and you’ll see the keywords compared.

Make sure you now research the keywords even further.  Google them and look for some of the big article marketing names such as ezinearticles, squidoo, usfreeads and others.  There is always some valuable info in these articles.  Read them carefully. It is also a good idea to purchase the product you are promoting if you can afford it – there is no substitute for personal experience!  Your own testimonials can get you AWESOME sales copy!

If you are promoting your own business online, you are in a very unique and POWERFUL position with your keyword research….  Remember that the best keyword tool is your brain…. in particular if it is your company…  who knows your business better than you?

Carefully consider WHO your customer is and what they really want….  put yourself in their shoes…  What would they type into Google?

Come up with some basic concepts and use the tips above to get started!!!!  Use the information in this post as a great keyword research resource!  Free keyword research strategies can be hard to come by…  Use this info!

How To Link Your Text Using HTML

Mar 15
2009

This is a great post for newbies….

Have you ever wondered how to turn your words into a clickable link using HTML?

Now I know a lot of people new to the Internet Marketing game get creeped out by HTML code, but linking up text really is easy and a necessity for article marketing any website…..

Below is the code used to make the clickable link shown above:

< a href=”http://www.best-internet-marketing-resources.info”>clickable link</a>

NOTE: I have added a space in between < and a at the beginning of the code above to get it to display correctly…

All you need to do is add your affiliate link or website URL in quotes after the href= ……

< a href=”http://www.Your-Affiliate/Website-Link.com”>clickable link</a>

Then just type what you want the link to say after the > symbol….

< a href=”http://www.Your-Affiliate/Website-Link.com”>What You Want to Say</a>

This code is very helpful when article marketing at sites like Go Articles, or Ezine Articles….  You need to know how to use it to make your keywords clickable in your article content… which is really important.  When you are article marketing a website or affiliate product, make sure tht you use your targeted keyword in the title of the article and also make the keyword a clickable link somewhere in the text of your article.  This is VERY important if you want your article to rank well on Google.

So, to wrap up, to make a clickable link using HTML, you just need to insert your affiliate link in quotations after ‘<a href=’ in the code, and then what you want the link to say in between the > symbol and </a>.

< a href=”http://www.Your-Affiliate/Website-Link.com”>What You Want to Say</a>

If you copy/paste the code above into an article site like Go Articles, What You Want to Say will be a clickable link.

Remember that the link above has a space in between < and a at the beginning though, so you’ll need to delete that space….

If you need more help on this one, check out this FREE HTML tutorial from Ezine Articles…..

What is Keyword Density and Why Is It Important?

Mar 12
2009

There is a lot of buzz about keyword density among internet marketers, but what is it? If you are asking, “What is keyword density?  Why does it matter?!!”, this post can help!

Below is Wikipedia’s basic definition of keyword density:

Keyword density is the measurement in percentage, the number of times a keyword or phrase appears compared to the total number of words in a page.

So Google heavily considers relevance when adjusting its rankings…..  if a keyword is written enough times within your content, Google will recognize it and move your web page, article, blog, or whatever, up the rankings.….  It is a tad more complicated than that, and the Google ranking algorithm is a well guarded secret, but one thing is for certain….  Messing up keyword density can ruin your article marketing campaigns before the articles are even published….

So why not just write your keyword a hundred times over so Google will pick up your article?

Google hates it, that’s why….  and it is NEVER a good idea to awaken the sleeping Google giant.  If your keyword density is too high – meaning if you write your keyword over and over, Google will see it and HAMMER your content to the DEPTHS of the SERPs….. (SERP’s = Search Engine Results Pages in online marketing geek language…..)

The ideal keyword density is 1-3% for an informational article…. if you are promoting a specific product as your keyword, you can get away with 3-5%….

To get the actual keyword density for your content, you just need to divide your keyword by the total number of words in your article and multiply it by 100…..

For example…..  8 instances of my keyword in a 357 word article….

8/357 = 0.022 X 100 = 2.2%

The keyword density is 2.2%…..

Proper keyword density in an article/blog post is a MUST if you want your content to stand a chance of hitting page 1…..

It’s important to take the time to calculate your keyword density before publishing your content!

How to Get Your Squidoo Lens Indexed on Google FAST!

Mar 12
2009

Before I get started on the RSS stuff and getting indexed ’stuff’, I wanted to let everyone know about an awesome free giveaway that I found from Pot Pie Girl, who is a prominent internet marketer that uses Squidoo…..  PPG has created a FREE GUIDE ON CREATING A SQUIDOO LENS that will teach you some neat Squid tricks!  Just join her mailing list and it will be sent to you!

Pot Pie Girl Squidoo For Dummies!

Pot Pie Girl Squidoo For Dummies!

On to HOW TO GET YOUR SQUIDOO INDEXED FAST…….

So Squidoo is huge right now in a lot of article marketing circles….  A lot of prominent and successful internet marketers use Squidoo to drive traffic to their landing pages….

If you have recently created a Squidoo lens, and you want to get it indexed quickly, there are some tricks that you can use to get the lens indexed within HOURS. That’s right, HOURS.  Not weeks or months.

The first thing you need to do is learn about RSS (Really Simple Syndication)…. Here’s some info from Wikipedia:

RSS (abbreviation for Really Simple Syndication) is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format.[2] An RSS document (which is called a “feed”, “web feed”,[3] or “channel”) includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software called an “RSS reader”, “feed reader”, or “aggregator”, which can be web-based, desktop-based, mobile device or any computerized Internet-connected device. A standardized XML file format allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed’s URI (often referred to informally as a “URL” (uniform resource locater), although technically, those two terms are not exactly synonymous) into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader checks the user’s subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds.

Basically, an RSS feed is almost like a Magazine subscription for your Squidoo or Blog. If someone subscribes to your feed, your content is added to their RSS feed list and your content is made easily available to the viewer.

Every Squidoo lens has an RSS feed….

There are a lot of RSS Feed Submission sites that can help drive backlinks to your Squidoo lens, thus raising your ranking in the Squidoo network and Google itself….. and getting you indexed FAST!

So, to get your lens indexed on Google quickly, you need to take the RSS feed from your squidoo lens, and submit it to some RSS feed submission sites.

First, let’s locate your RSS feed on your Squidoo lens…. it’s on the right hand side of your screen – just scroll down a bit and you’ll see it…..

Finding your Squidoo RSS feed!

Finding your Squidoo RSS feed!

See the RSS feed above circled in green? Click it! This will show your RSS feed for the lens!

Finding Your Squidoo RSS Feed!

Finding Your Squidoo RSS Feed!

Copy the feed url that you see highlighted in green in the screenshot. Now you need to go to a couple of really good Feed Submission sites!

Head over to www.2rss.com/index.php – Scroll to the bottom of the page and copy/paste your feed url into the URL section.  It will look like this:

Submitting an RSS Feed.

Submitting an RSS Feed.

Enter your feed, select a category, and then add a description…  Select Add when you are ready…..

Now, one feed submission is probably not enough….

You’ll need to go to some other feed submission sites as well….

I like www.feedraider.com, www.feedest.com, and www.rssmad.com ……

Submit feeds to 2RSS and all 3 of those RSS directories, and your Squidoo lens will be indexed within 12 hours….

But ‘how do I know if my lens has been indexed?’…….. To see if your lens is indexed, simply copy your regular URL (not RSS feed URL) and go to Google…  Enter the URL into Google and search it… If your lens is found, you are indexed on Google!

Hopefully this will help anyone who is interested!

Just an FYI for you, but I learned this technique and more from Pot Pie Girl, who has a fantastic ebook called One Week Marketing….  Pot Pie Girl also has a FREE guide on how to make a killer Squidoo lens!
